KCAS Pets of the Week: Nessa and Fawn

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — This week's featured adoptable pets from the Kent County Animal Shelter are a happy girl who knows some tricks and a very shy dog who needs a quiet home.

Fawn, a 4-year-old American Staffordshire terrier, is very smart. She was curious during her visit to the News 8 studio on Friday, looking around at everything and wagging her tail. She's social and likes to ride in the car, shelter director Angela Hollinshead said.

Fawn came to the shelter as a stray, but she must have had a family before that because she knows how to sit and shake. Offered a treat, she quickly gets focused on what she's being asked to do.

If you're willing to put in the work to befriend Nessa, she could be right for you. She is a 4-year-old Labrador retriever mix.

Nessa initially came to the shelter in 2022 and was ultimately adopted out then, but immediately ran away from the new owners. She arrived back at the shelter in January.

The shelter says she does eventually warm up to people after a lot of work, but at first gets scared by quick movement or even eye contact.

"Nessa needs the most patient family," the shelter said. "She does everything she can to avoid scary situations like meeting new people."

That means the shelter isn't very good for her: she needs a home with a family. The shelter said she would do best in a quiet home with a solid routine and few visitors.

"She deserves to be given the time she needs to open up and show you how sweet she can really be," the shelter said.

Hollinshead said the shelter has been at or near capacity for several months. It currently has a total of 90 animals of all types, including a large variety of dogs. For more information on adopting any pet from KCAS, visit the organization’s website or call 616.632.7300.
