GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — This week's featured adoptable pets from the Kent County Animal Shelter are a dog who's adapting quickly to losing a leg and a calm lady.

Luna is a 2-year-old black Labrador retriever mix who came to the shelter after she was hit by a car. When the shelter veterinarian checked her out, it was decided that one of her front legs must be amputated.

"We do several of those surgeries a year on dogs and cats," shelter Director Angela Hollinshead explained. "It does not slow her down one bit."

Since it's been less than a month since her surgery, Luna is still learning how to get around with a missing leg, but she is getting the hang of it quickly.

"(Dogs) adapt very well," Hollinshead said.

In the News 8 studio Friday, Luna was curious about the strange surroundings, smelling everything, but was calm and didn't bark at anything in the new environment. Hollinshead said she is playful and loves tennis balls.

Or you could pick Marmalade, an 6-year-old American Staffordshire terrier mix. Staff says she's calm and sweet, and does very well on a leash. She likes to lounge around, but she does enjoy going on walks.

She gets along well with older, calmer dogs like her, but not as much with younger dogs to have too much energy for her.

The shelter says it has 37 dogs awaiting adoption, so there are plenty of options. And through Saturday, all dog adoptions, including a license, are $50. For more information on adopting any pet from KCAS, visit the organization’s website or call 616.632.7300.

Hollinshead said there are actually a total of about 70 dogs in the shelter, but many are still marked on stray holds. She said anyone missing an animal should give the shelter a call to see if their dog is there.
