GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — This week’s featured adoptable pets from the Kent County Animal Shelter are two sweet dogs.
Charleen is a 2-year-old Chihuahua. Shelter Director Angela Hollinshead said she is energetic, sweet and compact at around 11 pounds.
“She is a really small, compact dog. So if you have a small space and you are looking for a small breed, she is ready for adoption,” Hollinshead said. “It does take her a little bit of time to warm up to strangers, but when she gets to know you, she is just right on your lap and she is so very sweet.”
In the News 8 Studio Friday, Hollinshead explained that while larger dogs are more common at the shelter compared to smaller breeds, “we never know what’s going to show up.”
Or you can adopt the noble Duke, a 9-year-old American Staffordshire terrier affectionately known as Sir Dukington. At around 70 pounds, the shelter says he is a “distinguished gentleman looking for his forever home.”
Duke lives with a foster family and loves to go for walks, play with toys and snuggle. His foster family said of him, “a very good boi with exceptional manners and is fully potty trained.”

“While Duke prefers to be the only pet in the household, he makes up for it with his boundless love for people,” the shelter said. He is neutered, microchipped and up to date on his vaccinations.
