GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The Kent County Animal Shelter is launching a special adoption promotion as it prepares to temporarily move for facility improvements.

On Jan. 21, the shelter will temporarily relocate to 2055 Oak Industrial Dr. NE. It will be closed that day as staff and volunteers move the animals to the new location.

The temporary site will be operational through mid-March 2025 as the shelter undergoes floor renovations. It will operate with a reduced kennel capacity. Stray animals will be accepted but owned pets won’t be taken during that time.

To reduce shelter populations, dog adoption will be $50 throughout the renovation. The shelter also encourages residents to foster animals from January through March. A foster application can be found online.

"With the reduced capacity and the requirement to accept stray dogs regardless of available space, we need the help of our community during this renovation," shelter director Angela Hollinshead said in a news release. "We are committed to providing resources for pet owners and maintaining our commitment to never euthanize healthy, adoptable animals due to space or time constraints. Achieving this goal, however, requires the support of our community."

More information and updates can be found on the county’s website.
