GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — This week's featured adoptable pets from the Kent County Animal Shelter are a "cool, calm and collected" dog and a friendly rooster.

Blue the rooster came to the shelter as a stray and was never claimed. He's calm and friendly, the shelter said.

"A lot of people are surprised to know that the Kent County Animal Shelter takes a lot of different types of animals, including rabbits, bunnies, ferrets and chickens," shelter Director Angela Hollinshead said.

Roosters generally do best when they're the only rooster around, Hollinshead reminded. She also said you should check with your city or township ordinances to make sure chickens are allowed.

If you're in the market for a dog, Naomi is a 2-year-old American Staffordshire terrier. A shelter volunteer who recently hosted Naomi overnight described her as "cool, calm and collected." The volunteer said she was well-behaved, is house-trained and does well in the car and on a leash.

"Naomi has excellent manners with no reactions to anything," the volunteer said, adding that she only climbs on the furniture if someone gives her the OK.

She likes to play with squeaky toys and is gentle when she is playful. She is treat-motivated, so she should be amenable to training.

The shelter's special offering dog adoptions for $50 continues through Saturday. That includes spaying or neutering, vaccinations, a microchip and a Kent County smart dog license. Hollinshead said more than 30 dogs are ready for adoption.
